Maintaining your washing machine

The washing machine is one of the most used and important household appliances.

It treats you well and makes your life a lot easier; return the favour by making sure it is well looked after!

Maintenance is imperative to keep your washer in good and safe working order. By maintaining your washing machine you can avoid costly issues and having to repair or replace it for years!

5 ways to maintain your washing machine:

  1. Don’t overload the machine. Load the machine appropriately according to its individual weight capacity and use the correct water level for the amount of laundry you’re doing. Wash bulky or heavily soiled items separately, such as towels, bedding, or tradies work clothes!
  2. Clean the lint filter. Cleaning the lint filter ensures that the machine is working effectively and removing lint from your clothes. If you notice your clothes are coming out of the machine with a slight furry layer then this is an indication that the lint filter needs cleaning and by doing so your clothes will be washed effectively.
  3. Leave the door/lid open when you’re not using it. Leaving the door or the lid closed all the time traps moisture, which can lead to mould and mildew growing inside the machine. By leaving the door or lid open after every load, the moisture evaporates and your drum can dry fully, keeping it fresh!
  4. Check the hoses regularly. Hoses should be checked for any cracks or leaks regularly. Always make sure that the hoses aren’t bent or have kinks in them, as this will put extra pressure on them and they may crack or leak. If any issues are found then the hoses should be replaced.
  5. Wash your washing machine! People often presume that because your washing machine cleans all of your laundry the machine itself is always clean. The reality is the dirt and grime that is removed from clothes can build up in the working parts of the machine and the hoses. You can clean your washing by running through an empty load with a washing machine cleaner found in the cleaning section of the supermarket, or you can DIY a solution of warm water, vinegar and baking soda which works just as well!

By maintaining your washing machine properly you should get years of life out of it.
