Choosing the right sized washing machine for your family

choosing the right size washing machine

A washing machine too small for your family means weekends full of washing!

Washing machines come in a range of shapes and sizes. Choosing the right size washing machine for your family will save you time, effort and money!

Washing machine sizes are generally measured in kilograms.

This isn’t the weight of the washing machine, but the load that the machine can efficiently and comfortably clean. It is important to note that this weight is the dry weight of the load.

A guideline for laundry weight:

  • 1kg = 5 shirts
  • 1kg = 2 bath towels and a pair of jeans

By this math a 6kg washing machine should be able to wash 12 bath towels, or 30 shirts!

If you have a large family and get through lots of towels each week or wear bulky clothes for work such as tradie shirts and pants, a larger washing machine may make your life easier.

Never overload your washing machine. Not only is this bad for the machine itself, it also won’t wash your clothes effectively. If you are finding your clothes are still soiled at the end of a cycle it may be time to upsize.

However if you have a small household and only do one load of washing a week you may be able to get away with a smaller machine.

Naturally, a machine with a larger load capacity will be bigger than a smaller one. If you are looking for a bigger machine, as well as the capacity, check the actual dimensions to make sure it fits into the space you are planning on it living!
